Wine Tasting the Healthy Way
Most studies have shown less heart disease in wine drinkers. These effects are thought to be through several compounds that are found in wine, particularly antioxidants, resveratrol and bioflavinoids. These compounds seem to have effects in preventing atherosclerotic disease of the blood vessels. In part they may have effects on cholesterol, lowering LDL, the badcholesterol, and raising HDL, the good cholesterol. Other studies have shown that wine drinking decreases the risks for some forms of cancer as well. IHR offers wine tasting and pairings with healthy foods that promote long life spans.
The first rule of healthy wine tasting is that you need to remember it’s wine tasting, not wine guzzling. In other words you only have to take a sip to appreciate all the different flavors in the wine. Granted, some wines are more complex than others, and they may require a few sips; but for the most part you don’t have to finish every last drop of wine put in front of you. But feel free to do so if you want to ! But before you even take a sip, take a few minutes to admire the colour and the aroma of the wine. Then, take a small sip and swish it around in your mouth, hold it for about 5-8 seconds and see how many different flavors you can identify before swallowing it. Concentrate on the taste of the wine, not the volume you consume.
